Saarinen's prize-winning, stainless steel gateway arch comemorates westward pioneers. Visitors may ascent the 630-ft high arch. In the nearby courthouse Dred Scott sued for freedom in the historic slavery case. The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial consists of The Gateway Arch, The Museum of Westward Expansion, and St. Louis' Old Courthouse.
